Precautions

  • All users of this Sekurus must be trained in its proper use. If you have not been trained on the use of the Sekurus, contact your veterinarian.
  • Before use, always read the label and leaflet of the vaccine to be injected with the Sekurus carefully and completely.
  • Keep both the vaccine leaflet and the Sekurus leaflet in a safe place for future reference. In the event of accidental self-injection, stop the injection session immediately, wash the injury thoroughly with clean running water, seek prompt medical advice taking the vaccine package leaflet with you.
  • To avoid needle-stick injuries, do not attach the needle until after the Sekurus is primed. Do not store the Sekurus with the needle attached.
  • Always keep Sekurus and needles out of reach of children.
  • Do not modify this Sekurus in any way.
  • Do not use the Sekurus if damaged.

BEFORE USE
A Priming Sekurus TOP
  1. Remove protective tab from closure of Product Container and pierce rubber stopper with a sterilised needle.
  2. Attach the Draw-Off Cap to the Product Container and the other end to the Sekurus Inlet Spigot as shown (A2).
  3. Use lanyard to hang Product Container from a suitable hook or around the Operator’s neck so Product Container drains into Delivery Tube.
  4. Grasp Sekurus as shown (A4), then depress Trigger with forefinger.
  5. Using spare hand, hold Needle Guard as shown (A4), keeping hand and fingers well clear of Needle Guard aperture. Pull Needle Guard fully back and hold in this retracted position for remainder of priming procedure.
  6. Squeeze together and release Sekurus Handles repeatedly. This will draw product through Delivery Tube. Once product enters Barrel, carefully squeeze Handles to expel remaining air from Barrel. Tilt Sekurus upward to assist with removal of air from Barrel.
Care should be taken to avoid spillage of product during this procedure.
  7. Allow Needle Guard to return to its forward, protective position and release Trigger. Sekurus is now ready for Needle attachment.
B Needle Attachment - Option 1 TOP
Remove Needle Guard
  1. Grasp Sekurus as shown (B1) (with palm to side of crown) and press Needle Guard Release Tab with thumb.
  2. Grasp Needle Guard with other hand and pull Needle Guard to detach from Sekurus (B1)
Fit Needle
  1. Ensure that Needle is suitable for use with the Needle Guard. Refer to Needle Guard Table overleaf.
  2. Grasp Sekurus as shown (B4). Keep thumb and fingers on 4. sides of Metal Slide so that they are well clear of Trigger.
  3. Fit Needle onto Luer and rotate clockwise (when viewed from 5. front) to engage threads (B4). Use clean pliers / small spanner to tighten Needle. Avoid over tightening.
Do not use Needle Removal Tool to fit Needles, due to risk of contamination.
Replace Needle Guard
  1. Grasp Sekurus as shown (B6). Keep thumb and fingers on 6. sides of Metal Slide so that they are well clear of Trigger.
  2. Grasp Needle Guard with other hand as shown (B6), ensuring 7. hand is well clear of aperture.
  3. Align Guard with Metal Slide and push Needle Guard onto 8. Metal Slide so that the Release Tab of the Needle Guard clips into place.
Helpful hint: When aligning Needle Guard to Metal Slide, tilt Needle Guard so that Release Tab is angled slightly upward.
C Needle Attachment - Option 2 TOP
  1. If Needle is sheathed, and Sheath fits through aperture as shown (C1), this will allow Needle attachment without having to remove Needle Guard.
D For Maximum Effectiveness TOP
Only inject clean and dry animals; avoid injection through wet and soiled skin. Do not rush. Move slowly, approach animals quietly. Maintain cleanliness of Sekurus at all times during immunization.
Injection Procedure
  1. Refer to the product leaflet for the correct site of injection.
Do not inject at any other site.
  2.  Keep Sekurus perpendicular (90º) to the skin as shown (D3). DO NOT use Sekurus at any other angle or product may not be administered properly.
  3.  Ensure correct Needle Guard and Needle are fitted for perpendicular injection (refer to Needle Guard table).
  4.  Bring Sekurus to required injection site of animal.
Only depress Trigger immediately prior to injection. Keep body and free hand well clear of Sekurus.
  5. Hold Trigger in depressed position. Then, in one fluid motion, press Sekurus firmly against animal so Needle Guard fully retracts and Rear Handle is driven toward Front Handle to a hard stop. Observe Plunger travel.

Helpful hint: Focus on driving back the Needle Guard rather than trying to squeeze the Handles together. The rear Handle will travel forward naturally once the Needle Guard is fully retracted. With practice this action will become smooth and effortless and pressure against animal will be minimal. Always point the injector away from your own body during immunization.

  1. Wait momentarily, release Trigger then withdraw Sekurus clear of animal.
  2. Allow handles to move apart and lock.
  3. Clearly mark all injected pigs with an appropriate mark or tattoo, taking care to avoid accidental needle-stick injury.
E Needle removal - Option 1 TOP
Remove Needle Guard
  1. Grasp Sekurus as shown (B1), with palm to side of crown, and
press Needle Guard Release Tab with thumb.
  2. Grasp Needle Guard with other hand and pull Needle Guard to
    detach from Sekurus.
Needle Removal
  1. Use Needle Removal Tool for safe Needle removal as shown
(E3). Rotate anti-clockwise (when viewed from front) to disengage
    threads.
Replace Needle Guard
  1. Align Needle Guard with Metal Slide and push Guard onto Slide so that Release Tab of Needle Guard clips into place. (B6).
Helpful hint: When aligning Needle Guard to Metal Slide, tilt Needle Guard so that Release Tab is angled slightly upward.
F Needle Removal - Option 2 TOP
  1. If Needle is sheathed, and sheath fits through aperture as shown (C1), this will allow Needle removal without having to remove Needle Guard.
  2. Dispose of Sheath & Needle into Sharps Container (F2).
G Cleaning & Lubrication TOP
Note: Immediately after each session, the Sekurus MUST be cleaned and lubricated for safe and proper use in the future. Failure to do this may leave the Sekurus inoperable. It is recommended that disposable gloves are used while cleaning the Sekurus.

Cleaning
  1. Clean exterior of Sekurus, Needle Guard and Draw-Off in detergent. Rinse with clean water.
  2.  Submerge Draw-Off in clean tepid water. Squeeze Trigger, retract Needle Guard and hold in retracted position. Squeeze and release Sekurus Handles repeatedly to pump water through the system. Pump to waste – avoid recycling the water through the Sekurus.
  3. Leave the tepid water in the delivery system for approximately 5 minutes to help dissolve any remaining product before continuing to vigorously pump the Handles to ensure thorough flushing.
  4. Remove Draw-Off Cap from water and continue to pump the Handles to empty the system.
  5. Remove Draw-Off Tube from Inlet Spigot of Sekurus.
Lubrication
  1. Remove Needle Guard and unscrew Barrel by turning anticlockwise (when viewed from front) as shown (G6).
  2. Check Plunger O-Ring is clean and free of debris.
  3. Apply vegetable oil to circumference of O-ring.
  4. Refit Barrel.
Storage

Always store without Needle attached (See Needle Removal
section).

  • Sekurus must be cleaned and lubricated prior to storage.
  • Store in a clean, dry place out of reach of children.
  • Do not leave the Sekurus near any source of heat.
  • Protect from direct sunlight.

Trouble-Shooting TOP
1. Sekurus fails to prime / stay primed
  • Ensure that the Product Container is inverted and contains sufficient fluid.
  • If problem persists, thoroughly flush system (see section G) and retry priming.

2. Sekurus is slow to refill
  1. Lubricate O-Ring with vegetable oil.
  2. If problem persists, thoroughly flush system (see section G) and retry.

3. Locking mechanisms fail to reset
  • Do not use Sekurus.
  • Please notify Simcro.
